Last year we introduced the nation to
Julian Newman, a basketball phenom who
made his high school varsity debut as a fifth-grader playing for his father Jamie at
Downey Christian (Orlando, Fla.).
After MaxPreps published a story on the diminutive point guard last December, he was featured by the New York Times and even made an appearance on late night television with Conan O'Brien.
But another member of the Newman family is stepping up to steal the spotlight from Julian this year.
Fourth-grade sister
Jaden Newman, just 9 years old, is displaying some of the same skills that made her brother a national story at the tiny independent school. Also coached by dad, she is posting 14.8 points and 7.5 assists per game for the girls varsity team, according to statistics submitted to MaxPreps.
Now a grizzled veteran of a sixth-grader, Julian is averaging 16.7 points and 9.6 assists per game this season for the Patriots. We've got the latest footage on him as well.
