Video: Nathan Hale wins national titleRaiders went 29-0 en route to league, district and state crowns.Former NBA All-Star Brandon Roy just wrapped up his first year as a high school basketball coach, leading
Nathan Hale (Seattle) to a 29-0 record along with league, district, state and national titles.
But his promising coaching career was nearly derailed over the weekend when he was shot in the Los Angeles area.
According to reports, Roy was an innocent bystander in what may be a gang related incident.
Roy played high school basketball at
Garfield (Seattle), college at Washington and then six seasons in the NBA before knee injuries cut his career short.
The 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Year made the transition to the bench last year, taking over a hapless Nathan Hale program that won just three games in 2015-16.
Under Roy's guidance and with MaxPreps National Player of the Year
Michael Porter Jr. on the roster, the Raiders took Seattle's competitive Metro League by storm. Nathan Hale won the prestigious Les Schwab Invitational in Oregon and beat storied Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) at the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Massachusetts.
The Trail Blazers released a statement on the reported shooting this morning:
"Like many others, we're just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California. According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander, but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time."Brandon Roy watches his team warm-up prior to Washington's Class 3A state championship game in March.
