Video: Sierra Canyon's double-OT win over No. 5 Bishop Montgomery
See Ohio State-bound Duane Washington Jr. sink a three-pointer at buzzer to send game into first OT.The boys basketball team at
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) proved once and for all they are more than just a side show.
The Trailblazers, who draw loads of fans because they feature the sons of four former NBA players, defeated No. 5
Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 77-74 in double-overtime semifinal thriller of the CIF Southern Section Open Division Saturday night at Cal Baptist.
The victory ended Bishop Montgomery's 41-game win streak dating back to last season when it surprised many with a state Open Division crown. The Knights (26-1) opened this season with 26 straight wins.
Duane Washington Jr., whose father played 13 seasons in the NBA and is the nephew of Derek Fisher, drilled a three-pointer to send Saturday's game into overtime. Washington gathered a length-of-the-court pass inside the key, took a couple of step backs and drained a highly-contested shot.
Bishop Montgomery, which got a game-high 26 points from
Gianni Hunt, took a 71-69 lead in overtime, but
Scotty Pippen, the son of Scottie Pippen, found
K.J. Martin, the son of Kenyon Martin, for a layup to send the game into a second overtime.
Martin (18 points, 21 rebounds) made a bucket in the second overtime to go up for good 75-74 and Washington (20 points) sealed it with a floater. A three-quarter court shot at the buzzer was close, but the Trailbazers held on in what many were calling one of the best CIF playoff games ever. Watch the highlights above courtesy of NFHS Network.
Sierra Canyon (23-3), which also got 18 points for top junior recruit
Cassius Stanley, will almost assuredly enter the MaxPreps Top 25 basketball rankings after the win.
Bishop Montgomery's last defeat was 73-67 to Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) on Jan. 16, 2017. During that 41-game win streak it defeated Sierra Canyon twice.
Sierra Canyon moves into Friday's Open Division final to face Mater Dei (Santa Ana).
