All the positive feedback and excitement over Brittney Garner becoming its new head coach couldn't help the
Pickett County (Byrdstown, Tenn.) football team on Friday.
At least not on the scoreboard.
The Bobcats dropped their fourth-straight game with a 41-21 defeat to
Monterey (Tenn.) at Tennessee Tech.
Garner, a former basketball and softball standout at Pickett County, is
believed to be the first female head football coach in state history. The 25-year-old began the year as co-head coach with Jeff Holt, who was let go last week. Garner, who admits her football experience is minimal, took over as lone head coach last week.
If she didn't take over, with no other credentialed coach at school, the Bobcats would have had to forfeit the season. Her players - all 23 of them - are thankful that she stepped up and accepted the role. She doesn't get involved much with the strategy of the game. Former coach O.B. Caudl has come back to help with that.
Pickett County, a 1A school that has won just three games since 2009, won its opener 20-6 over Clinton County but has dropped four straight.
Garner, also the school's softball coach, said she wants the Bobcats to win, but it's not her top priority. She's their to support the boys and the school, a place where she once starred in softball and basketball.
"By nature, I'm a very competitive person, just like most athletes," she wrote. "Of
course we all want to win. But my reason for being there is so the boys
can play their sport and have a good time."
Garner is the second woman in a week to be named head varsity football coach in the country.
San Diego (Calif.) picked Knengi Martin as its new coach Tuesday after former coach Doug Packwood abruptly stepped down. Martin has played professionally for the San Diego Surge of the Women's Football Alliance since 2003.
