Baseball: Canyon’s Vincent Fitzgerald hits two grand slams

Senior first basmean Vincent Fitzgerald of Canyon Country Canyon had a day to remember on Wednesday, going four for four with two grand slams in the Cowboys’ 17-0 Foothill League win over Golden Valley.

“I’ve never seen two grand slams in a game before,” Coach Adam Schulhofer said. “He had been struggling, so this is huge for him.”

Blake Leidholdt threw a four-hit shutout for the Cowboys.

There’s only one team left in Southern Section Division 1 that hasn’t lost a game, and that’s Newhall Hart (9-0-1, 3-0), which scored five runs in the sixth inning to defeat West Ranch, 5-2. Pearson Good had the key hit, a two-run single. Paul Richan had two hits and also pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Indians. Valencia defeated Saugus, 7-1. Devin Davis hit a two-run home run. Anthony Lepre had three RBIs.

In the Sunset League, sophomore Logan Poueleson got a strike out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to save Huntington Beach’s 2-1 win over Fountain Valley. Jarrett Anton had a two-run triple with two outs in the seventh and finished with three hits. Edison defeated Newport Harbor, 4-1. Kaz Akamatsu struck out seven. Marina defeated Los Alamitos, 2-0.

Mission Viejo defeated El Toro, 6-4. Cooper Herrera and Tyler Clark each had two hits. Brea Olinda defeated Esperanza, 4-3. Daniel Jang went three for three and Matt Lemmons threw a complete game.

Freshman Tommy Palomera allowed one unearned run in six innings in Chatsworth’s 5-1 win over Alemany. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 25 innings this season.

Birmingham defeated Sylmar, 3-0. Adrian Rodriguez threw six shutout innings and Ivan Lomeli went three for three with two doubles.

Sun Valley Poly defeated Arleta, 4-1. Jason Cisneros struck out six and gave up two hits in six innings. Yovanni Rangel went two for three with three stolen bases. Christian Leyva struck out 10 in Fulton Prep’s 7-2 win over Sherman Oaks CES.

Verdugo Hills defeated Taft, 5-4.

In the first game of a doubleheader, Loyola defeated Crescenta Valley, 7-5, in 10 innings. Nathan Hadley threw five shutout innings of relief. Angelo Armenta and Matt Omori each had two hits and two RBIs. In the seocnd game, Armenta had three more hits and two RBIs in a 9-2 Loyola victory. Quinn Brodey struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings. Loyola improved to 9-1 and has nine consecutive victories since an opening loss to Calabasas.

In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian defeated Nordhoff, 4-1. Christian Stoutland struck out nine and allowed three hits. Noah Prewett had two RBIs.

In North Carolina, Orange Lutheran was beaten by Florida Coral Springs Christian, 1-0, despite a strong pitching performance from Garett King. Aliso Niguel fell to Tennessee Dyer County, 16-1.

In Arizona, Blake Chiaramonte hit a grand slam in Moorpark’s 10-4 win over Colorado Valor Christian. Simi Valley defeated Whittier, 3-2. Tristan Friedl, Cal Hodgins and Austin Fields each had an RBI.

Harvard-Westlake defeated Virginia Flint Hill, 19-2. Brian Ginsberg hit two home runs and had six RBIs. Ezra Steinberg went three for three. Jack Flaherty had four RBIs.

Santa Barbara dropped two games in Arizona, losing to Colorado Chaparral, 11-4, and Arkansas Southside, 9-7. Ian True had two singles and two RBIs in the second game.
