Chino Hills (Calif.) punched its ticket to the semifinals with an 83-82 win over No. 1
Montverde Academy (Fla.).
Brothers
Lonzo,
LiAngelo and
LaMelo Ball sparked the victory for Chino Hills (7-0), combining for 77 of the team's 83 points.
LiAngelo – a 6-foot-5 junior shooting guard headed to UCLA – led the way with 32 points. Senior point guard Lonzo added 29 points, eight assists and six rebounds while freshman LaMelo dropped in 16.
Chino Hills led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter but Montverde Academy (8-1) rallied to make things interesting late.
LiAngelo Ball made a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds to go to give Chino Hills an 83-80 lead, but the Huskies fouled on a 3-point attempt on Montverde's subsequent possession.
That put freshman
R.J. Barrett at the line for the Eagles. After hitting the first two, Barrett couldn't connect on the third attempt and the Huskies escaped with the win.
Barrett finished with a team-high 31 for Montverde to go along with nine rebounds.
Montverde Academy had won 29 games in a row dating back to last year's City of Palms Classic, where the Eagles fell in the final to
Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.). The Eagles have been crowned national champs by MaxPreps two of the last three years.
Chino Hills will meet the winner of Monday night's game between No. 24
Westerville South (Westerville, Ohio) and
High Point Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.) in Tuesday's semifinals.
