See the Gabriel Richard player in action.Six new teams cracked the Top 25 in this week's Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. But the big question is how far Gabriel Richard (Ann Arbor, Mich.) will climb when the final rankings are released Dec. 8.
In winning the Michigan Class B state title last Saturday, Gabriel Richard ran its record to 42-0 and moved up to No. 3 in this week's rankings. Gabriel Richard swept through the postseason winning all eight matches and did not lose a set in the process. For the season, the Irish won 102 sets. The 42 victories include a win over No. 7 Novi.
Gabriel Richard first cracked the Top 25 on Sept. 22 at No. 19. It broke into the Top 10 in October and moved to No. 6 on Nov. 1, then to No. 4 on Nov. 17.
Indiana 4A champion Indianapolis Cathedral remained No. 1, followed by No. 2 Jesuit (Portland, Ore.). Can the Irish keep climbing to overtake Jesuit and Indianapolis Cathedral?
Despite winning its final 47 matches and winning the state 5A title, St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kan.) slipped from No. 3 to No. 4. Torrey Pines (San Diego) remained No. 5 after advancing to the California Division I regional playoffs and extending its winning streak to 27.
New to the Top 25 this week are Hebron (Carrollton, Tex.), La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (N.Y.) and three California teams – Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), Redwood (Larkspur) and Trabuco Hills (Mission Viejo). Mitty was ranked in the Top 25 earlier this season.
The four California teams appear headed to a showdown with Torrey Pines and Trabuco Hills in the D-1 tournament and Redwood and Mitty in D-2 divisional play.
