MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Boys Basketball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard 1. (No. 1 last week) Chino Hills (Calif.), 13-0Lonzo Ball and the Huskies won the City of Palms Classic and MaxPreps Holiday Classic over the break, beating teams from eight different states in the process. Averaging over 100 points per game, Chino Hills might be the best ticket in basketball outside of Oracle Arena this season.
2. (5) Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), 20-1For the sixth time under head coach Steve Smith, the Warriors captured the title at the Les Schwab Invitational in Oregon. Oak Hill beat No. 6 DeMatha in the final 82-66 one night after Smith notched the 1,000th win of his career.
3. (2) Atascocita (Humble, Texas), 20-0Tournament MVP
Carsen Edwards led Atascocita to the title at the Neosho Holiday Classic in Missouri, where the Eagles won four games by an average margin of 38.2 points per game.
4. (8) Montverde Academy (Fla.), 15-1Since the last rankings dropped Dec. 23, Montverde Academy posted four wins at the Beach Ball Classic in South Carolina and beat No. 6 DeMatha 74-71 at the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia.
5. (6) Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), 9-1Big month ahead for the Trailblazers, who will participate in the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions in Missouri and face No. 4 Montverde Academy at the Hoophall Classic in Massachusetts.
6. (4) DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.), 10-2Conventional wisdom says a two-loss team doesn't belong this high in the rankings at this point in the season. But DeMatha's losses came against No. 2 Oak Hill Academy and No. 4 Montverde Academy within the last week. Credit goes to the Stags for ambitious scheduling on top of a treacherous Washington Catholic Athletic Conference slate.
7. (7) The Patrick School (Elizabeth, N.J.), 5-1Two unbeaten Garden State teams follow the Celtics in the rankings but neither of them faced No. 1 Chino Hills. The Patrick School fell to the nation's top-ranked team in overtime of the championship game at the City of Palms Classic.
8. (12) St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.), 5-0 Shocker, another great defensive team under Bob Hurley at St. Anthony. The Friars are allowing just 45.8 points per game.
9. (NR) St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.), 12-0Hats off to head coach Mark Taylor for getting the Gray Bees back in the national conversation with a somewhat unheralded roster. St. Benedict's Prep has notched key wins over Westtown (Pa.), La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) and Archbishop Carroll (Radnor, Pa.) since Christmas.
10. (9) Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.), 14-0Three juniors are leading the Pilots in the scoring column this season, guard
Markus Howard (19.8 points per game) and forwards
P.J. Washington (16.9) and
Donnie Tillman (16.8).
11. (3) Garfield (Seattle, Wash.), 8-1The out-of-state portion of Garfield's schedule is complete but plenty of challenges still await in the rugged Metro League.
12. (16) Hammond School (Columbia, S.C.), 12-0Winners of two holiday tournaments in South Carolina,
Seventh Woods and the Skyhawks have won 29 games in a row dating back to December 2014.
13. (15) Overland (Aurora, Colo.), 7-0The Blazers will step out-of-state only once more this season, Feb. 13 at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Nebraska against Omaha South.
14. (17) Greenforest (Decatur, Ga.), 14-1Keep in mind 7-footer
Ikey Obiagu was out with an injury in Greenforest's only loss of the year.
15. (NR) St. John's (Washington, D.C.), 12-1En route to the championship game at the Beach Ball Classic after Christmas, the Cadets notched quality wins over Mustang (Okla.), Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Shadow Mountain (Phoenix, Ariz.). They also beat bubble team and WCAC rival Paul VI back on Dec. 10.
16. (11) La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.), 14-2Both of La Lumiere's losses have come against Top 10 teams. The Lakers picked up a quality win Saturday over Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) at the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia.
17. (18) U-D Jesuit (Detroit, Mich.), 6-0The Cubs take the floor Tuesday against Romulus following a 12-day layoff.
18. (21) Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.), 11-0After missing his junior year with an injury,
Amir Coffey is looking like an All-American candidate as a senior for the unbeaten Royals. The University of Minnesota signee is averaging 18.5 points per game – one of five Hopkins players averaging double figures.
19. (22) Stevens Point (Wis.), 9-0In a rematch of last year's Wisconsin Division 1 state championship game Dec. 30, senior guard
Trevor Anderson went for 31 points in a 77-64 win over Germantown.
20. (24) North Central (Indianapolis), 9-0Eight of North Central's nine wins have come by 20 points or more.
21. (20) Roman Catholic (Philadelphia), 7-1Huge game in Philly on Wednesday as Roman takes on formerly-ranked Neumann-Goretti.
22. (25) High Point Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.), 13-2The Cougars get a second crack at No. 1 Chino Hills on Jan. 18 at the Spalding Hoophall Classic. The first meeting came in the City of Palms Classic semifinals.
23. (23) Prolific Prep Academy (Napa, Calif.), 14-3Pro Prep has played arguably the toughest schedule in the country to this point. One of the team's three losses came without
Josh Jackson in the lineup and another was to Canadian powerhouse Athlete Institute – which they avenged a mere three days later.
24. (NR) Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.), 11-3Jayson Tatum and the Red Devils have played six games against teams that have appeared in the Top 25 this season and all three losses are to currently-ranked programs.
25. (NR) Morgan Park (Chicago, Ill.), 10-1MVP
Charlie Moore led the Mustangs to an 81-55 win over Fenwick (Chicago) in the final of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30. Morgan Park's lone blemish came against No. 17 U-D Jesuit.
