Video: 4-Star RB Sean McGrew (St. John Bosco, CA) - 2014 HighlightsWashington-bound star running back
Sean McGrew is so good that even when he doesn't score the touchdown, he plays a huge role in the ones that others score.
Friday night's 42-21 victory for No. 4
St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) over No. 19
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) wasn't entirely fueled by McGrew, but in the end, no player on the field had a larger imprint on the final score, one that wasn't as close as the numbers show.
After McGrew's 45-yard run in the first quarter, teammate
Cross Poyer darted in from 5 yards out. Then McGrew made it 14-0 in the second quarter with a huge 81-yard jaunt down the right sideline.
It became 21-0 later in the quarter after McGrew couldn't get in the end zone, but Poyer finished the drive off on fourth down from a few yards out. Then he helped in the two-minute drill before halftime, a drive capped off by a 22-yard scoring run from
Devin Fleming.
So even with two others scoring rushing touchdowns en route to a 28-0 halftime lead, McGrew was still the one making most of it happen. Then he made it happen himself in the third quarter with a 56-yard scoring run to make it 35-0.
Terrence Beasley capped off the scoring with a 3-yard run late in the third and it was 42-0, meaning it was only a matter of time before the Braves moved to 7-0 with all seven opponents put on a running clock.
How good was he? One of his punts took a hop and hit a Mater Dei player, giving his team the ball back and an eventual touchdown.
The Monarchs had trouble on offense throughout the first half but once the running clock came around, they found some success through the air.
Osiris St. Brown caught a pair of scoring passes from freshman
JT Daniels and
Andre Collins also grabbed one.

With DeMatha losing in Maryland, the Braves are guaranteed to move up at least one spot in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Naitonal Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. And with how dominant they have been this season, they certainly are in the running for a national title.
And for Mater Dei, the brutal Trinity League schedule takes on a lot more importance the rest of the way.
