For the first time since then-Maurice Drew ran roughshod against them, the
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) football team will play the Jackrabbits of
Long Beach Poly (Calif.) in 2015.
De La Salle announced its schedule at a team banquet on Sunday and it included showdowns with three prominent Southern Section schools, finished off with a home game versus Long Beach Poly in Week 7.
The two storied programs first met in 2001 and 2002, the first when Jones-Drew — then just Drew — scored four touchdowns in a 29-15 win at Long Beach City College. De La Salle also won the rematch 28-7 at Cal and Drew rushed for more than 150 yards and a touchdown.
He had a little ribbing to do today regarding those games.
Evidently not. The defending mythical national champions according to the
MaxPreps computer rankings also will play former CIF State Bowl champions
Orange Lutheran (Orange) (week 3) and
Servite (Anaheim) (week 4). Those games are at home.
The most mysterious and interesting part of De La Salle's schedule is that it opens the season in Texas in Week 0. The opponent, day or place is not determined. It will be picked in the next few months by ESPN, which is promoting the event.
De La Salle will return 1,800-yard running back
Antoine Custer and
Andrew Hernandez, along with starting quarterback
Anthony Sweeney and four-star recruits
Boss Tagaloa , a two-way lineman, and tight end/defensive end
Devin Asiasi.
